Sync and Follow Your Favorite Movies & TV With Trakt on Kodi

Trakt is a great free online service where you can track all the Movies and TV shows you watch and want to watch. Create your own lists, follow their TV Calendar and more importantly you can integrate it with many Kodi Addons so you never lose track of shows you’re watching, shows you want to watch and Movies.

Basically with Trakt you can keep track of TV shows you’re watching, queue up next episodes, list movies and TV into manageable lists and when integrated with Kodi, make your TV and film viewing a lot easier to manage. So, how do you do it? In this guide we’ll show you how to create a Trakt account, sync your account to Kodi, also sync it to some popular addons including Placenta and Covenant.

So, first things first.. lets set up Trakt with Kodi.

  1. Firstly, you need to head over to Trakt and create a free account
    .
  2. Once you’ve done this, open Kodi.
    .
  3. Once in Kodi select System > Addons (for Kodi 17 just select “Addons”)
    .
  4. Now select “Install from Repository
    .
  5. From the list of repositories, select “Kodi Add-on repository
    .
  6. Now select “Program Addons
    .
  7. From the list of addons, find “Trakt” and click “Install” and wait for the “Addon Enabled” notification
    .
  8. Once installed a popup will appear asking you to go to https://trakt.tv/activate (the pop up will also have a code you’ll need later)
    .
  9. Visit the above address (https://trakt.tv/activate) in a browser (web or on your phone or tablet is fine), and after you’ve logged in with the account you set up in step 1 (if you’re not already logged in) you’ll see this screen.

    .
  10. Enter the code from step 8 and click continue.

    .
  11. After clicking continue you’ll get the message:

    .
  12. Click “Yes” and you’ll see this message:

Back in Kodi, the box from step 8 will go and another identical box will appear and you’ll repeat steps 9 – 11 (you have to authorize Kodi twice for Trakt)
    .
  13. After authorizing Trakt the second time, back in Kodi, you’ll see the box disappear and get the message:

    .
  14. Optional: Once activated, go to Trakt in Kodi and if you use Kodi on a PC right click on Trakt, or if you use Kodi on a TV box hit the context button (usually three horizontal lines) and click Configure
    .
  15. Once in the config menu you can customize your Trakt, although you’ll find you may not need to do anything here.

Once you have activated Trakt it’ll now keep track of TV shows and movies you watch. But you can do much more with Trakt. For one, if you go to your Trakt account you can create your own lists (Comedy Movies, scifi TV shows for example) and then you can search for TV shows and Movies and add them to these lists. You can then directly access these lists from your favorite Kodi addons (Covenant etc) for easy access to the TV and movies from these lists.

Before trying out Trakt in Kodi, I’ll show you how to add some stuff to your watchlist and a customized list. The difference between these lists is your watchlist is a list of stuff you intend to watch, and once you’ve watched the movie or TV show it’ll disappear from your watch list, and for TV shows, once you watch an episode, Trakt will automatically queue up the next episode. With a customized list, it’ll stay there like any playlist you may create in Spotify, Youtube etc.

So, let’s add an item to your watchlist, then create a customized playlist and also add an item to that:

  1. Log into Trakt in a browser.
    .
  2. Click the search Icon and search for a movie or TV show.

    .

  3. After searching you’ll get a list of hits from your search.

    .
  4. Under the item you want to add to your watch list, click the small icon with the blue lines (see below) and click “Watchlist” which will turn blue when you’ve added it.

    .
  5. After adding this item to your watchlist let’s create a playlist and add something to it. Firstly, in the top right of the screen, click your profile name and from the drop down list, click “Lists
    .

    .
  6. On the lists screen, you’ll already see your watchlist and the item you added to it above. But we want to create a new playlist. So click “Add List
    .

    .
  7. A popup will appear to create your list. Give it a name, for this example I called it Comedy Films”. Also here you can select if your list if private or public; there’s no harm in making it public (others can see your list), but feel free to keep it private if you prefer. Once you’ve done this click “Save List
    .
  8. After creating your list, click the search box in the top left again and search for something.
    .
  9. Once your search results appear, like above, click the “add to list” icon (the one with the blue lines) and select the list you just created. It’ll turn blue when added.
    .
    .
    .
  10. Now you’ve done this you’ll be able to integrate Trakt with TV and Movie addons like Exodus and you’ll see your watchlist and playlist selections automatically in Exodus. Read below for how to do this.

To sync Covenant (or any Exodus fork: Fantastic, Placenta etc) with Kodi do the following:

We’ve chosen “Placenta” for this Demo.

  1. Open Placenta in Kodi
    .
  2. Select “Tools
    .

    .
  3. Select “SETTINGS: Accounts

    .
  4. In the right hand box, you’ll see “Trakt“.
    .
  5. Select “Authorization” below “Trakt”

    .
  6. You’ll get a similar activation popup you saw earlier asking you to visit https://trakt.tv/activate and input a code.

    .
  7. Visit the above URL in a browser, log into your Trakt (if not already) and enter the code from your Kodi pop up and click “Continue“.
    .
  8. Say Yes when asked to authorize “Trakt” for your Addon
    .
  9. Once activated, like before the pop up will disappear and you’ll see your Trakt username in the Trakt section.

    .
  10. Your Addon and Trakt are now linked.
    .
  11. From the Addon main menu now, you can use “My TV Shows” and “My Movies” menu options which will display your Trakt watchlist and playlists.
    .
  12. I’d recommend you just explore you’re addon now and areas which include “My” or “Trakt” to check out your watchlist, playlists etc.

As for other addons, many do have Trakt integration. If you go to Settings > Addons > My Addons > Video Addons > Then choose an addon, click “Configure” and you’ll see if there’s an option to link Trakt, you may have to browse the config menus for the addon, but have a play and you’ll get it 🙂
